Every winter, blocks of ice are lifted from the Torne River and turned into a hotel. By spring, most of it melts back into the same river.
Jukkasjärvi lies about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, a short drive from Kiruna. The seasonal building is designed afresh each year, with artists from around the world invited to create individual art suites. Since 2016, Icehotel 365 has kept a permanent ice section open all year, cooled with the help of solar power. Nights in the cold rooms are spent in thermal sleeping bags on reindeer hides; warm rooms and cabins are available for the rest of the trip.
